Students cross things out. They continue answers on another page. They use a different method, leave a calculation unfinished, or draw something their written explanation does not fully describe. Building for those responses has shaped how we think about evaluation. The paper, the question and the marking criteria all matter. So does the academic judgement used to interpret the result.
